how would i be able to install a game thats a tar file in linux step by step?

i downloaded a game and its a tar file. i know that you got to move to your directory in terminal and than unpack it with the tar -zxvf commmand but i just dont remmeber how to move to the directory where the file is located- like what command do i use to redirect there?? thankz
