Lincoln would been scared of what it has become. It is conservatives without a conscience, a bunch of people out of control with radical beliefs.

The 1860 Republicans were major sponsors of prohibition, a measure soundly opposed by liberals of the time. Also, among the first criticisms launched by the Democrats against the Republicans of 1860 was that they were "The Party of Big Business." Republicans of 1860 were considered "too conservative" by the liberals of their own time period. Liberal Democrats try to re-write history because they don't like their own past. However, slavery was the product of the moral relativism endemic in liberal thinking. Conversely, abolitionists were devout Christian conservatives who stood their ground against immorality. It was the moral compass of 1860 Republicans that inspired their fight against slavery, not liberalism.

this is kind of misleading because today's republican party was not the same as in lincoln's time, or even have of the 20th century. the republicans were only republican in name. It was actually kind of reversed. Party shifts occured several times, with the first major shift occuring in the 1930's when Democrat FDR (democrats until this time were conservative) applied the socialist New Deal program to end the great depression and adopted a more liberal policy towards blacks, social programs, conservation, etc. Then it was really solidified when Kennedy got elected.
