Here is the most recent hunting report for my area:
General BEAR season is now open. Hunters can expect an average year. The dry weather conditions will concentrate bears near streams where foraging will be better. Hunters should concentrate their efforts in the berry patches in early morning and late afternoon. Bear numbers are good with the highest numbers in the coast range, and with smaller populations in the Cascades.
So how would you approach hunting for black bear with this report?
Just looking for tips. My son and I were up there yesterday and we did this in the exact opposite manner. We spent the morning around an old logging site and thought we heard a grunting sound and deduced that it could have been a bear, but could also have been a bull elk.
But we did find an area that had berries and there were signs of recent foraging, as there were many stumps that looked freshly ripped apart. Two things that bothered me were: no discernible bear prints and I saw no scat, despite hiking a road for about 1 1/2 miles in. The nearest stream is about 3-4 miles down the mountain road and not very accessible. There are two other streams in the area, within 7 miles or so. Thanks!

Tahoe> We have some descenting spray, we bathe with non-fragranced shampoo and soap before we go. We also wash our clothes in fragrance free detergent and use fragrance free dryer sheets.
Also, the area is about 20 miles west of Diamond Lake and Crater Lake National Park. You can see the terrain on a topography map on Acme. Thanks!
Midtown> I never get my hopes up. I don't really know what I'm doing. Just started hunting last year. Mostly doing this to get some quality time with my son and to get out in the wilderness to scout the area for Elk season. In the event, I get something-it will be a pure bonus!
