htc desire bluetooth conection problem?

probably a daft question, i tried to pair a new htc desire to my cars built in bluetooth system this morning (last phone was easy), its ok until i get to the enter pin stage, the htc menu only seems to offer W and P in letters, the rest being the usual numbers, the car bluetooth code is 4 letters (dont know how to change that either) rather than the usual 1234,0000 etc

am i being daft

how can i enter letters into the HTC code rather than the numbers it offers

yes it does show a full on-screen keyboard, but it is numerical only with the letters W &P, i dont know why only these these two letters, i cant figure out how to change the screen to a full lettered keyboard if indeed you can. basically at the moment when i try to enter the pin i cant because the letters arent there to do it

When you press the field to enter the PIN, don't you get an on-screen keyboard? A full on-screen keyboard? Sorry to answer your question with another question, but I'm kind of baffled at this issue.
