HTC Sense and Virus Protection?

I have a new HTC desire HD, which comes with HTC sense that allows you to lock and wipe your phone wirelessly anyway, which is what many of these virus protection apps and such offer. Is it still worth downloading an app that can check for viruses and malware? How succeptible are smartphones to this sort of thing?
