I am unable to connect to internet explorer or aol , i tried calling aol

no help and same with cable company? I recently had a virus on the computer and removed the virus and , even while I had the virus I was able to get online. I tried to get on a few days ago and have been unsuccessful. When I attempt to sign on to AOL the location box is empty and says it is trying to detect a modem. Internet Explorer gives me a error page and says try again and still no internet. If anyone has a resolution please let me know thank you so much!
