I am utterly confused on nutrition labels! HELP!?

I have been watching my calorie, fat, sugar, and sodium intake. I have just read that a 1g carb = 4 cals, 1g sugar = 4 cals, and 1g protein = 4 cals. Do those carbs, sugars, and protein turn into calories ONLY if you go over the daily allowance? I'm on a 1,800 calorie diet. Lets say I eat 30g's of protein, 40g's of sugar, and 150 carbs . . . am I really consuming 2,680 calories? (did the math)
