I believe it is an 80s sci fi movie...All I remember is a teen finds a ray/laser gun?

I think the gun was connected to a backpack(power pack). After finding this, he sort of became an outlaw, and everyone wanted the gun. There was a girl with him also; not a hostage though.

Wish I could think of more, but that'ss it. Any ideas on what this movie might be??
I'm pretty sure it took place in a small town

I agree that it is probably Laserblast, one of the worst movies ever made.
