i cant browse the web but my computer has an active internet connection.?

hi, i have a hp laptop running windows vista home edition(please dont chew me out for using vista it was given to me from a fried). anyway, my web browsers worked fine up until a couple days ago when windows ran automatic updates. after the updates were installed and my computer restarted, firefox or internet explorer waws unable to load any web pages and gave me the message that says i am not connected to the internet. i am postive the laptop is connected to the internet because i can still run aim, frostwire, outlook, and etc. with no problems. it just doesnt seem to want to access web pages for some reason that is unknown to me. if someone could please assist me with this problem it would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
 
try this:

start > then in the search thingy on "Vista" type cmd

then type ipconfig /renew

might work, might not
