I can't burn files on my DVD-ROM.?

Ok so I had a lap-top before and now I have a real computer with a screen and everything. On my lap-top, I could burn any files on my DVD-ROM. Now, when I put blank DVD-ROMs in my computer, it can't find it and when I try to burn files on it, it says: Please insert a CD. (As if I didn't put one already.) I iinstalled Nero but it doesn't work anyway. Could someone tell me what to do and why it worked on my lap-top but not on my computer?
