I deactivated my iPhone. Why are text messages still going to my iPhone?

I decided to switch to a non-smartphone to save a little money. I went from an iPhone to a Pantech full keyboard phone. I now use my deactivated iPhone for it's data functions in wi-fi at home (like an iPod touch). However whenever someone else with an iPhone sends me a text message it doesn't come to my Pantech. Instead it still comes to my iPhone as an "iMessage." I turned off the iMessage function and then when someone with an iPhone texts me it never arrives. The text messages get lost in space. Any ideas? Seems like an Apple glitch with the new iMessage feature,

it just takes a little while to switch the program over, if its still not working right within a week, talk to the companies
