I don't know what to get rat?

I am really tied between a rat. Or a Gerbil. I think they are both cute, but I can't decide and people are just saying "get the rat because smarter" but i need more lol. So can someone plz help me out give both pros and cons and here would be my scheduale.
morning I am gone till 4 pm do homework till 6 (some times it varies) and then play with my animals. I once and a while wouldn't be able to play with my animal for no longer then 30 mins to 20 mins thanks

Oh ya can you train gerbils??
 
Well, both should be kept in PAIRS, so if getting 2 isn't an option, then you may want to reconsider your options.

Rats tend to enjoy being handled more than gerbils, so if you aren't home often and/or do not have at least an hour per rat to handle them....don't get rats.
