...to jailbreak? or should i just buy a cheap samsung phone and put its sim card in my current samsung eternity?
oh and my 2 year contract ended with att....
 
Call AT&T and ask for the subsidy unlock code. If they ask why, just say that you think you may have to visit a foreign office and the office stocks lock sim card for visiting business people to use. Of course, since you paid for the phone, you have every right to unlock it so they can't refuse the code but they will try to convince you to use their international roaming subscription instead or to pay to have it unlocked for you at an AT&T shop.

I always unlock all my cell phones as soon as I get them.
