I got pulled over by a sheriff in california for dog in back of truck.?

My dog, an Akita, was in the back of my Chevy s10. He is a big dog but I have him safely and comfortably chained to both sides of the truck so he can not fall or jump out. I was pulled over by a sheriff and he told me that I could not have him in the back because he was too big. He said I needed to put him in a cage. Yeah right was my response to that remark. He did not give me a ticket just a warning but now I feel he might see me again. I don’t think there is anything he can ticket me for but I want to be sure. Anyone know the laws concerning dogs in the back of a truck in California?
