...2nd or 3rd gear approaching? A traffic light and i do not downshift to first gear will the motorcycle shut off or stall? i know most people will say take a Motorcycle safety course which i might or might not so any experienced rider feedback would be greatly appreciated thank u
 
to simply answer this - in too high a gear going up to the lights when slowing down and releasing throttle without changing down the bike will probably jump and sound a bit choked...but you can always just go down gears or do what i always do coming up to lights and simply pull the clutch in then drop the gears as your slowing.
 
While at a stop, slowly let out the clutch.
If the engine feels like it's going to stall, give it some throttle.
If it still feels like it's going to stall, down shift.
Keep repeating until you find the correct gear to start off in.

while the transmission is in 2nd or 3rd gear"
As long as the clutch lever is pulled in, you can be in any gear
while the bike is not moving without the engine stalling.

If the engine feels like it's going to stall, pull in the clutch lever.
