i have a p3s 40gb can i paly blueray films on it?

do you have to have a full hd tv to play blue-ray films i have a 40gb ps3 and i having bother playing my films i can hear the film but cant see it?? i have 42inc tv it 3years old ive plugged my ps3 in to the tv using the hdmi lead but cant see the film just Hear sue if my tv is 1080p please help thank you

On your PS3 main oage, go check your settings. If you;ve plugged it into a HD tv for the first time, you'll need to adjust it for a HD tv. At which point all will be bright and shiny.
