I had a credit card account that was charged off. Last summer I received a settlement letter from a collection agency acting on behalf of the credit card company. (The collection agency never reported on my credit) I made the required payments and the account was settled and marked as such on my credit reports.
It had been like that for many months until I pulled my credit recently and noticed that the credit card company had changed the settled in full notation to sold to another lender.
Has this happened to anyone before? Can they legally sell an account that they agreed to take a settlement on? I do have proof of settlement offer and payment as well as an older credit report where it was marked as settled in full.
Does anyone have some suggestions on how best to handle this?
* I do know that a settled account won't necessarily help my FICO score but I needed to settle this account for mortgage purposes.
Unfortunately the collection agency and credit card company would not agree to a pay for delete.
