I have a Slyvania dvd/vhs player and I dont have a remote!!! PLEASE HELP?!!?

I recently purchased some new dvds only to find out I can not play them simply because I dont have a dvd remote and I can not move up or down on the menu to play them, is there a manual way to do this?! My player has no select buttons, just play stop fast forward and rewind. The fast forward button doesn't work. That was my first try. Any help would be AMAZING!!!
Thank you but I bought a universal remote, doesn't work.
 
You can buy a universal remote at the drug store, or Walmart, or...
 
Hitting play is generally the "select" button on the actual unit, but you will not be able to select different menu options without fast forward and rewind working, i suggest getting a universal remote from radioshack or amazon, make sure you check for capatability
