I want to install the generic HTC Hero software, with no branding on. I have heard this can be done but not sure how. Also my phone is unlocked, will it still be unlocked afterwards? Thanks

HTC and other Android phones remain unlocked forever. In fact, the iPhone is the only device I've ever heard of that re-locks jailbroken phones when you try updating them with iTunes. Incredible.

Go to this site:

Look up your phone and see a lit of what modified ROMs are available. Installing these will require rooting your phone (not the same as unlocking), so there's a small element of risk involved. However, I've heard of very few cases of users doing these things and bricking their phones. I've rooted both my old T-Mobile/HTC G1 and my current Nexus One. Never had a problem.
