firmware is 4.2.1.? Is it possible to update the firmware to 3.1.3 by downloading the proper .ipsw file and holding shift + restore? Would that work?

Your best bet to keep your baseband is to restore with 3.1.2 then jailbreak with blackrain. After that download the latest snowbreeze and the 4.1 firmware. Run snowbreeze and create the custom snowbreeze firmware the restore with shift +restore and load the 4.1 snowbreeze file. Whatever you do do not update with the original 4.1 or 4.1.2 through iTunes. Check out you tube restore to 3.1.2 and 4.1 with snowbreeze.
