Looking back, he'd never imagined himself here. A smart, down to earth caring man, always well dressed was now sitting nervously. It wasn't just how he was or how he was sitting but where he was sitting and who it was with. A woman. He was with a woman. Of the many things in his life he thought he had figured out he never thought of settling down, he hadn't quite gotten there yet. She was exquisite however. Even as she sat anxiously in that waiting room with his hand held tightly in her own. He wasn't even sure he had ever seen her this way before. Not only was she far from her grounded self, she was much like him when it came to style. She wouldn't be caught dead wearing sweat pants, no matter what was going on. He didn't even think she owned a pair in that massive closet filled with suits, pants, blouses and coats. Today however, she was wearing loose fitting sweat pants, sneakers, no jewelry, her hair messily in a bun a top her head. He still thought she was beautiful.
"What's taking them so long?" She asked, nervously.
"Don't worry." He responded in his most soothing tone. "Why are you shaking?"
"I'm anxious." She said quickly. Just as she began she noticed the large wooden door across from them open, and a short, stout woman clad in Care bear scrubs stepped out with a clip board in hand.
"You can come on back." She said with a smile.
"You ready?" He asked helping her up, as well as with gathering their coats. She swallowed the gigantic lump in her throat and nodded. She stayed close to him as they moved swiftly through the halls. Now, his compose was starting to slip, and he felt his own heart race he couldn't show it now though.
"Right in through here, the doctor will be with you in just a few minutes." Nurse happy smiled wider than she had been and left them.
They hadn't sat yet, even her eyes were anxious now.
"Honey," He began in the sweetest voice he could muster. "Don't worry."
He held her tightly against his chest and could feel her heart pounding. He rubbed her back softly as he held her.
"Sorry to keep you waiting." They heard the deep male voice come from behind them. "Why don't you sit down." She forgot his name, fear completely overcame her now, she knew she should have come in sooner. Why wouldn't he just look up from that folder?! The room sat quiet for a moment.
"Is everything all right doctor?" Her young husband asked. It wasn't his first time down this road, everyone has scares.
"Oh certainly." He responded with a lighter tone. " I just want to be sure."
"Sure about what?" She asked.
The doctor looked up only for a second and turned the folder he had been so intently gazing into toward the young couple in front of him.
"Does that say what I think it says?" Her husband began to smile.
"I don't know I'm shaking so much I can't even see it."
"It does, you are pregnant."
A scream of excitement left the young Pole's mouth. He lifted his young wife from her chair, and held her as tight as he could. A single tear fell across her cheek.
"Finally."
