i just quit smoking and am coughing up phlegm w/ tar. is it safe to swallow

phlegm with tar in it? the phlegm i cough up has tar bits in it. i don't always have access/ability to spit it out like if im in public, so does it hurt my lungs at all if i swallow the mucus with the tar in it?
this was weed not cigs... so let this be a warning to all you people who say weed isn't as bad as cigarettes!! i've learned it's better to just bake it in brownies much healthier.

Umm.. I suggest you spit it out because tar is toxic to the body and shouldn't even be there in the first time and that is why smoking is bad and not good for you..............

I don't think it's safe at all to swallow. When you swallow it, it ends up in your stomach, but it's coming from your lungs.
You should go to the doctor and get a chest exam quick. I don't think that is normal.

Definitely spit it out. Coughing mucous up is your body's way of getting rid of bacteria (which is what mucous catches).
