I am currently in the US Navy, which I am very proud of, I have done very well for myself but lately I have been disgruntled, I have noticed that some individuals in charge give away qualifications and awards to those who they like the most. Not that it really matters to me when it comes down to having awards, but I really do not think the Navy Achievement Medals should be given away to individuals for doing their job, such as simulating 1000 missile launches during drills or baking cookies at night.
I also think that giving away qualifications by making boards easier to those that are liked demoralize other individuals, like the ones that work for me that also attempt to better themselves with no results because there is no aid from the upper chain of command, although I am in charge I cannot pull enough weight to help them out, and here is the real issue, when shit really hits the fan, those that were "given the qualifications are not prepared to fight.

Welcome to planet purgatory at the behest of those sat on the throne of castle insanity.
I'm always the one who is right when history tell us we have never been so.

Reminds of when I worked in numerous factory's.
Chinese whispers ECT.
On one occasion a person I disliked was promoted to for-man from the shop floor, when he handed out the pay packets at the end of the week with cash in them he dropped mine on the floor as he handed it out to me.

Keeping up with the Jone's big boy club, beats chest in satisfaction, the hunt was successful today.
Who knows???

Yo can vent anytime. I totally understand, I just retired Army 20plus years and was an E7 and understandable that you are venting... Yes it seems seniors like to play favorites alot, but I think if you are doing the wright thing in your job and you are satisfied as what you are doing and happy with yourself then it's all good. Remember what comes around goes around and yes when it hits the fan and they can't fight worth crap then they will be dead. I was never for awards either, but when I gave them they derserved it, they performed there jobs over and above what they regularly do, not just for doing there everyday job.. I think if you like your job, just be happy,, there is always another day.. Don't worry about things you have no control of.

I sympathize, shipmate (and I use that phrase in the good way, not the common way. I'm not shipmating you).

But the problem is that's the system we live in. If I don't give PO2 Timmy a NAM for basically not drooling on himself too much, he may not make promotion next time up. And now, that means he may be eligible for PTS (PTS has been a real game changer), and probably doesn't survive that.

NOT giving people NAMs is perceived as negative in most cases, so it's a case of keeping up with the Joneses and a race to the lowest common denominator. We're not quite as bad as the Army and the Air Force in this regard, but we're still bad.

And yeah, we give quals away. It's a problem. We especially do it when:
a) again, it really helps that person out
b) the ship needs people for that watch.

And it will hurt us eventually, I guarantee, but the attitude seems to be that it's worth it now. We still have to man watches and watchstation. We don't have better options because we've dug ourselves into a hole.

I totally agree, overall though.
