i keep jumping out of bed in the middle of the night screaming?

on many occasions in the middle of the night i have jumped out of my bed thinking there is someone standing by my bed. I always run into my mom's room (i'm 19...) and usually by the time i get there i realize what i'm doing. on a few occasions i've screamed bloody murder. i am always shaking uncontrolably and almost to the point of tears. and even though i know theres not a person in my room the dream is so realistic that i don't want to go back to my room alone.

why the heck does this happen??

It sounds to me that you are having nignt terrors. When you have a night mare your body normally paralyzes itself so you can not act out the dream and hurt yourself. Night terrors, on the contrary, is when you get so frighted that you scream or run without,sometimes, realizing it.
