soft cellphone cases more protective? So the apple guy told me that the hard case offers better protection when dropping a phone, but my logical and always right brain thinks that this might not be the case. It seems like the more rubbery ones would absorb more of the force than those hard ones. But I will admit I am not a super brainy scientist, so what do you think?

you are RIGHT!!
but both cases will protect the phone depending on how thick the rubber case is
if the rubber one is thin its no use though,
the only difference is that if it falls the hard one might crack but the soft one does not !!
but the PHONE will not break !

I partially agree with you, because if you drop the phone from a high level, the rubbery case would be locally deformed too much, especialy if the point of contact would be any of the corners.
According to me, the best case it would be a stiff case covered by a rubbery case. The rubbery case absorbs what it can, while the stiff case spreads any excessive local deformation.
