I need help programming a universal remote to a dvd/vcr combination.?

I bought an RCA RCR4258R Universal Remote and for the life of me I cannot get it to program my philips dvd/vcr. It uses 5 digit codes and I cannot get it to auto or manual program from any of the numbers on the sheet. Anything I can do besides buy another remote?
