I need help putting movies on DVD+R?

I have DVD+RW on my laptop. A friend said to get DVD+R discs so I can put some of the movies I have on my computer on them and clear up disc space.(I have a lot of movies)
Problem is after I am done burning to the disc it only plays on the computer and not the DVD player.
How can I get it to work on the DVD player?
 
A movie on disc will not play on a tabletop unless it is compiled into a certain format. That is usually called authoring.

On a pc Nero will take movie files and recompile and burn them to dvd. A tabletop player will play -R, +R or RW discs equally well most of the time. -R is the safest disc type to choose if you aren't sure.

The authoring process is quite long unless you have a very fast computer.
