I read a book about a girl who was born with a deformed leg. Her father had been taken by "monsters" that the village she lived in believed existed. Her mother died when she was about 11 of an illness and nobody wanted anything to do with her. She couldn't do anything but knitting or weaving I think, and she learned how to dye them pretty colors. The color blue was very rare so she sought out a woman who knew how to make it, and made it.
