Well, I'm planning on playing defense this season, and I was just wondering if there are any tips? I kinda don't want to make a fool out of myself during try-outs, or the game. Also does the defender just make sure that the opposing team doesn't make a goal. Like do I protect the goalie? Thanks (: Oh and does anyone have tips for midfield? Thanks!

First learn your position as a defender, which side you will play; left, right or mid. also make sure you know if you are playing zone or one on one?. sometimes the line up could be 4 defenders on the back or sometimes your coach will play with 3 defenders on the back. most important part of being a defender is to know to play your position.....learn to anticipate the plays.

As the "defender" basically you've got to "defend" the goal, If anyone comes into your half of the pitch with the ball then tackle them and pass it to somone up front.

If you are defending on a 1 on 1, don't stand flat footed, and don't stand straight. Force him to one side. Preferably his weaker foot. You do that by standing partly sideways and therefore you are forcing him to go one direction. Another tip is to be patient. Don't just run up to him and kick at the ball. Be patient. Let him make the mistake. Odds are if you force him to one side, he will do a move to try to get the other way, when he is doing the move is when I would attack the ball. And if you are not in an elite or top league, a good way to look good is play central defender and just clear it out to the forwards.
