I need HELP wth my xbox 360 headsets please can someone help ill be really happy .?

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE I BEG HELP ME? i bought a xbox 360 headset yesterday and when i plug it in to my xbox controller it doesn't work the sound comes out of my television its really weird can someone please help me? ill be happy if someone works out my problem . :(
