I recently got a misdemeanor. Do I have to tell my future employer what happened?

Sooo I'm an idiot I dont know what I was thinking. I'm 28 live in the state of California I don't have any record or priors as this was my first time. I recently was arrested for shoplifting and got a misdeameanor for petty theft. I go to court in a few weeks to find out what happens. If I am looking for a job in the future and the employer asks me what happened do I have to tell them EXACTLY what I did? Do they have access to what exactly happened? Also, how do I get it expunged? can I get it expunged?
Can I tell them that my friend was the one who stole and i got blamed? or do I have to tell them that I stole..I'm 28 this is sooo embarrassing.
 
this is one of those dammed if you do dammed if you don't deals.if you do they may not hire you but if you don't and they find out which most likely they will then they aren't likely to hire you either. wait till you go to court see how it plays out if it is the first offense. then you may get it dismissed.
