...like to save the DVD on my laptop? and the main thing I want do is take certain parts of the dvd and e-mail them to some friends and family. I dont know if that is possible. I am computer literate but to do this I'm thinking who is a little bit more computer savy than. I have the first Windows Vista if there wis such a thing :) . I really would like help with this. Thank You so much

DVD's are encoded with MPEG4 video which can be read with most video editing software. There are also tools like Any DVD Converter (or Any Video Converter Professional) that are able to convert video from a DVD into other formats (for editing or whatever else you need to do.)

There are several video editing packages around including a few free ones that do a reasonable job. I personally use Pinnacle and Blender mostly. Blender is free; Pinnacle costs a bit but I use it mainly because it supports more audio tracks and has a lot of plugins for making transitions and such easier. Both can easily do what you've described.

use dvd shrink. it lets you cut parts and save them and back the whole thing up as an iso (not a bad idea) you will need a media converter tho to get the video clips to avi or what ever you are using
