I was once a very bright kid. Lack of sleep?

In my early child hood that is, now I am 16-17 and I believe i am very stupid. Many people say i'm still very smart but i refuse to believe so.
Can lack of sleep (sleepin only 4-7 hours of sleep for an entire year) be the problem. Could it have made me, well, stupid? It takes me longer to process things in my head now and i used to be very good at logic and analyzing things. Now all i do is take stupid risks that make me wonder why i did what i did only a few seconds later. If i start getting better sleep, could my brain be restored? Or whats gone is gone as brain cells cannot repair themselves?
