icable to hook ipod up to stereo?

Hokay. I have an ipod touch and also have those monster icable things that are supposed to hook your ipod up to a stereo. But i have no idea where to put the red and blue jack things into in the stereo. is it like only certain stereos you can hook it up to? im so confused about the whole ordeal. and after you have plugged the jacks in what do you do to hear the ipod? its very frustrating. Also, Im not good with like the whole technical lingo of like stereos and stuff, so if please you would answer this in simplest terms i would massively appreciate it
 
Ok, you are probably taking the long road.
You can pick up av cable (male on both ends) for cheap.
This just plugs into the headphone jack on the iPod and into the "auxillary" (or line in) port on your stereo.
