if a dog is spayed can it still go into heat?

i recently rescues a pointer, basset mix from a shelter. the shelter told me that she was spayed so i didnt think nothing of it til i talked to my friend and said her genitals shouldnt be that large. he said that she is prolly in heat but we dont know if that is possible if she is spayed, i am not much of a dog knower so any help would be great.
 
If they are spayed they shouldn't be able to go into heat. I have 2 dogs who are spayed and they don't go into heat anymore. If for some reason they are still in heat, the operation might not have been successful.
