...last for number of smokers? http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_dai_smo-health-daily-smokers

All it took was education. Imagine that: information causes free people to make better choices. What the hell do we need the government to be in control for?

I just love your choice of words when the subject is smoking. ummm DEAD LAST! Just because U.S. is dead last, that doesn't mean that millions of people aren't still smoking it just means that other countries may have a million and one. lol.

You know whats funnier.

The same people who want to ban cigarette smoking.

Want to make pot smoking legal.

Oh, they are just providing a product that people can choose to use if they please. Legislation always has to step in and you have to tax people for their own convenience (since they are sinning in many respects) and that they are going to be a tax burden with our socialist future that doesn't look so bright.

They are evil because of the misconception that non smokers like what el has said will have to start paying for the health insurance of the smokers when in all actuality the tobacco companies have paid for this to each and every state but the states took the money and used it elsewhere and now want some more of that money. They hare getting over 350 billion dollars from tobacco that if it were put in a trust would be more than enough to cover the health care costs of those who smoked.

But those who didn't smoke cried foul as they wanted some of that money spent on other things besides what it was intended for. so now they are going to have to pay they are complaining that they need more money from the tobacco companies. Even if they were to get more money they would spend it in other ways and it simply isn't fair that they blame the smokers and tobacco companies

It was the government that came out with all the programs to quit smoking, all the regulations to limit advertising, and all the educational programs about smoking.

These days, tobacco companies are evil because I, a non-smoker, am going to be forced to start paying for other people's lung cancer, heart disease and Buerger's Disease.

The Surgeon General's report was what really got the ball rolling. People began to quit. More than 50% of Americans smoked at one time. 6 or 7 years after the Surgeon General's report, Television tobacco advertising was banned by the government.
And Tobacco companies knowingly lied about the health effects of cigarettes for decades.
It was local and state government and the Federal government that banned smoking in movie theaters and elevators. Then airplanes. And then, over the years, everywhere else.
And don't forget sin taxes.
Government coerced people by banning smoking in public places and workplaces and taxed people to lower the number of smokers.
And so the state governments and federal government have become dependent on the tax revenues and would never consider banning it outright.
There is also a nod to history in that there would be no USA without tobacco. That is why there are carvings and frescoes of tobacco leaves all over the Capitol and White House.
The USA is the country that tobacco built.
And Canada has fewer smokers but it has had astronomical taxes on cigarettes for many more years than we have.

An education which wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for government intervention. If the tobacco companies were left to sell their lies unchallenged we wouldn't be where we are today.

Are you really this naive?
