If I block SMS, can I still have convos with IM on my iPhone?

Just don't want to get charge .20 at all yet still engage in chat with my friends
I have AIM on my iPhone. Just wondering how the protocols work out if I block SMS. Can I still be able to chat/IM w/ SMS phone numbers through AIM even though I personally will have SMS blocked out.
