If I buy the new iphone, will I loose all of my apps?

I currently have the original iPhone and want to upgrade to the iPhone 4. I have a ton of apps and contacts that I don't want to loose. Is there a way of backing them up on my computer first so that I can just put them on my new phone. Also, how can I wipe it clean so that I can trade it in without all of my information left on there.
 
Of course. In iTunes just right click the iPhone under devices & select Back Up.

When you're ready to wipe the iPhone clean just press Restore.
