...HDMI-compatible laptop as a DVD player? The roommate who owns the TV is moving out, and so my remaining roommate is thinking of asking for one for Christmas. We both have laptops that are HDMI capable and have DVD drives. If we got an HDMI capable TV and HDMI cord, could we use our laptops as DVD players?

HDMI compatible laptop- check.
HDMI cord to TV- check.

TV w/ HDMI input- looks like you still need that.
but yes. sound like it's good once you get the TV. some TV's will also have a PC input... thru that, you should be able to play your DVD from your laptop to your TV.

but if you're going for that HDMI connection, sounds like you'll be able to do it, from your description.

-connect HDMI cable to your laptop (source),
-connect other end of HDMI to TV (monitor), (which you're still going to get)
-play DVD on Laptop & enjoy.
