if i have an auxiliary inlet for a car stereo , can i use the auxiliary wire for it

on an mp3 player? do i need any additional ? ive seen ipod adapters you need to install to control the ipod thru the stereo. if its an mp3 player do i still need it? could i just control it thru the player itself?
im trying to decide to get a mp3 player or get a new stereo with a sd card .
