If I have Norton Internet Security 2008 is a program like Spybot S&D needed?

not needed. recommended to have 2, but not more than 2 spyware/antivirus programs. norton tends to destroy all other spyware programs installed on a computer, though, so i wouldn't get anything else.

It's good to have. But if I were you I dump norton, as it's a big time computer lag and slows it down big time. And installed AVG, along with spybot and then adware se, which will not slow your computer down an protect it just as fine. That's what my parents computer IT did for both of them.

This is just my opinion, mind you - but Norton IS a virus!

I would suggest AVG, AntiVir, or A-Squared; or some combination thereof. Even Spybot (which I personally don't think is all that good) by itself is better than Norton.

I have both and all Spybot ever finds now are some tracking cookies. Yes, Norton can slow things down if you do not configure it properly. I have been running it for 6 years on this machine without the problems so many others seem to have. As you should with any other program, try reading the directions to configure it the way you want it. Setting it to scan on every startup of every program or data file opening will be like throwing out an anchor.
