If i want to buy a Blackberry 8310 do i have to pay for special service every month?

Ok i have AT&T service, and i want to up grade my phone to a BlackBerry and i just didnt know if in order to have the blackberry phone you have to have a special plan to have it working?
I thought i could just put my sim card in it to make work....Like any other phone. I dont want to get it then get a bill for service i didnt know i had to have.
I hope i made this clear to understand.....
