If Jesus didn't wear gold rings and jewelry , why does the pope deserve to?

I'm not into religion, but I was baptised, and I definitely think religion can be nice to have, especially christianity. It just winds me up when I see all the gold shlt around the altar in churches. What's the point of them? Isn't it blatantly going against what jesus taught?
