If my pap smear results were ok, can I still develop Papilloma virus later on?

My boyfriends ex was diagnosed with the Papilloma Virus, he was with her two years ago. I just had a Pap smear done, and all is well. Can I still develop the Virus? Or would it have shown up by now with the Pap smear?
