If somebody practices judaism, why are they a 'jew' and not a 'ju' instead?

I personally think 'Judaist' sounds a bit more sophisticated than 'Ju'.

They would be Jew'ish'. A 'Jew' is a 'regional variant' of the human species. Regional variants are often (and incorrectly) referred to as 'races'

I would imagine that Jew is a phonetic spelling of a person from Judah.
