If the iphone didn't exist, would any other touchscreen phone exist?

Kind of 2 questions. If they got rid of the iphone (I really hope not! and probably never will but this is a hypothetical question), which touchscreen phone would be the next best thing?
 
theres a first for everything, so yeah they probably would have another phone out there.
 
They will not get rid of it obviously, but...there are many other touchscreen phones out there such as the google phone called the G1. It is an awesome phone and it is currently with tmobile.
