If you root the motorola droid from verizon does that mean you can activate it...

...without a data package? I am interested in getting a motorola droid on ebay and if I get it rooted does that mean I can activate it without paying the $30 data package? And does that also apply to the iphone, where if you jailbreak it, it can be activated without the data package? And if the droid is rooted can you get free apps like a jailbroken iphone? Also if you buy a droid or iphone that is unlocked does that mean it can be connected to any cell phone company?

No, you will want the data package believe me. im looking at an estimate of my bill right now currently i have used 628 mb of data, my bill isnt due for another week, data without a plan is $1.99 a mb so if i didnt shell out the 30 bucks my phone bill woulld go up by $1249.72, now isnt thirty dollars better than that? the reason for this is that the droid is constantly online looking for updates it uses alot of data
