...count has having been to that place? For example, my boyfriend and I went to the big island of Hawaii last year. We had a layover in Maui for about 2 hours before connecting to a flight to Kona. We did not leave the airport. He thinks this counts as having "been" to Maui, because his body was physically on Maui, so he was obviously in Maui. (He does brag not about going to Maui). But, I do not agree! The airport is a transient place. No one cares if you have been to the airport anywhere. This does not count as going somewhere if you do not leave the airport. What do you think?
 
I don't think it should count as "having been to that place".

I have traveled a lot and only count the places I have been at least overnight as places I have visited.
 
Technically you were in Maui, however you did not experience Maui. It's nothing to brag about. I could say I've been to France, spent 2 weeks on an air base. Didn't experience France, shoot it could have been somewhere in Kansas for as much as I saw. If he wants to tell people that he's been to Maui, then so be it, it's his story.
 
If you were in transit then you were still in neutral space, therefore he has not 'been' to Maui. I think the majority of people believe that to have 'been' to a place, you actually have to see a little bit of it at least. Airports do not count. Based on his ideas I've 'been' to Kuala Lumpar and Frankfurt, even though I was only in transit at the airport, but I'd be stupid to even pretend that I'd seen either place!
