I'm going to buy my first car...suggestions?

I'm leaning toward an Avenger because of the gas mileage and the way it handles and looks, but Ive been told to just get a Civic or a Scion, something along those lines. I'm looking at the gas mileage, of course, but something that looks nice and that's kinda fast, doesn't have to be street racing fast, just "those darn young people drive too fast!" type of fast.
