It's still the same car. I suggest you read Consumer reports, most VWs made in the last 10 years are just at or below average in reliability ratings.
I was looking to get a 05' VW Beetle and I called my mechanic and he said to most defiantly leave it off the list of cars I want to look into because they are expensive to repair and maintain. He highly recommended a Honda Civic since they are reliable and last long.
